How do I install the track textures?

Installing track textures isn't hard. First of all, you need to make a backup. You can do this by browsing to the rFactor\GameData\Locations\[trackname] folder, and then rename the MAS file containing the MAPs to something like [trackname]maps_orig.mas. Then you can safely extract the MAS file from the archive to the same folder, without overwriting the original file. If you've downloaded a texture set before, then it might be possible that the author chose to release it as an archive containing single DDS files. For the best result, I recommend putting these in a subfolder. This way they won't interfere with other sets, and you can always put them back later without having to download it again.

Let's take the Mills Metro Park as an example.

  • Simply rename Millsmap.mas to Millsmap_orig.mas;
  • Extract the Millsmap.mas from the ZIP file to rFactor\GameData\Locations\Mills;
  • Clear any loose DDS files by putting them in a subfolder;
  • You should now be able to enjoy the new textures without any problems.

Will the textures decrease FPS performance?

Generally speaking, no. Most people notice no difference at all between the original and my textures. In soms cases, people have even reported an increase in FPS (Frames Per Second), increasing performance by quite a bit.

Is there a way to revert to the original textures?

If you've made a backup as described in "How do I install track textures?", then all you have to do is delete the [trackname]maps.mas and rename the [trackname]maps_orig.mas back to [trackname]maps.mas.

If you haven't made a backup, then you can also download the original MAS file from the official rFactor File Repository site.

When you want to revert to the original textures of an addon, and haven't made a backup, then the easiest way is to redownload the track itself.

Will the textures cause any mismatches when racing online?

The general rule is that textures do not cause mismatches when you use them in an online event. Right now the only exception is the update for the Northamptonshire (Silverstone) track, where I used a modified GMT file to corrent a graphical glitch. If you want to use the Silverstone set for online purposes, then I suggest you delete or rename the included GMT file so it will not be loaded. In all other cases, these updates will not spoil your online fun.

Is there anything I can do to support SLN Updates?

Sure, there are a few things you can do to support me and keep me motivated.

  • Tell your friends about the textures. Spread the word, and let others enjoy from the textures too;
  • Webmasters can always add a link on their site to SLN Updates, and I'll probably add a link to yours;
  • Feel free to send me a mail using the contact form, or write something in my guestbook;
  • If you own a credit card, you can always donate a few dollars by clicking the PayPal button on the main page. Any donation is greatly appreciated...
